 Manicure
A pedicure nowadays has become a well-known cosmetology service for anyone, who cares about their health and how they look, as very useful and pleasant procedure.

Every day our legs have to endure enormous loads under the weight of our body and suffer from uncomfortable shoes (cramped, platforms, high heels, etc.). Some of us also impacted by seasonal factors. During winter, we keep our feet in warm, closed shoes for a long time, which increases sweating (the appearance of excessive moisture on the skin). With the onset of spring, we gladly wear high-heels or other fashion shoes, but our legs do not feel much better from this changes, they constantly endure pressure and friction from shoes, and the thumbs are prone to an unpleasant appearance of ingrown nails. In places of constant load and rubbing appear mazes and calluses. Summer and vacation, it would seem, should have brought relief for tired legs, but they don`t. Rays of sun, hot sand, sea wind – all of these factors negatively affect our feet. After wearing of the open shoe long-time the foot skin dries up, cracks, and nails often become dehydrated and brittle. Nowadays there are many ways and techniques that help keep our nails and feet skin healthy and restore the natural beauty of our legs.

The range of procedures for foot care offered by professionals is so varied and wide that it often becomes difficult for customers to understand what to choose. We will try to make it more clear and help you decide what procedure would be the most suitable for you. However, let us point up the list of the most common pedicure types offered nowadays:
SPA-pedicure – involves a superficial cleaning of skin with the application of all sorts of scrubs; a pleasant relaxing foot massage and, of course, nutrition and hydration of the feet skin.Hardware pedicure – is used for a deeper treatment of nails and feet skin with using hardware. The European or Biological pedicure is gentle treatment with a wooden stick and grinding saws, without the use of any cutting tools. Classic pedicure – is an ancestor of all the above-listed procedures and to this day is a number one treatment due to its effectiveness and more than one-hundred-year history. So what does the word “pedicure” mean and where it comes from? A few historical facts will help you figure this out.
The word “pedicure” comes from the “pedis” (Lat.) – the leg and the “cure” – as a treatment. As well as the manicure, the history of this procedure has begun in ancient times. The first pedicure appeared in ancient Egypt, as evidenced by numerous historical confirmations. The custom of painting feet and toenails revealed from the Middle East and Hindustan.

In ancient times, people have already known that our legs are very important part of the body, which affects internal organs. That is why the feet-care was so important for everyone, regardless of their status and prosperity level. An important role in ancient pedicure was given to foot massage, which was performed as well as in our times – after the removal of the coarse skin. Prosperous Egyptians rubbed many fragrant oils into the feet skin to moisturize, make it smooth and tender. Daily washing in water with aromatic oils was another rule of feet hygiene. The Egyptian queen Cleopatra had dedicated slaves, who were obliged for maintaining the beauty and health of her feet.
One of the main reasons for such scrupulous care for the feet was the prevalence of too open shoes. That’s why women had to take care of their nails and feet more frequently. In addition, there are archaeological findings of small pedicure sets, which have lots in common with modern pedicure instruments.

Other ancient countries, such as Rome and China wasn’t an exception. Taking the care for nails and feet was there just as important as the general state of the whole body.
Medieval Europeans preferred to trust the care of their feet to barbers who were both hairdressers, dentists, and even chiropractor those days. So the skin treatment was often carried out together with dental procedures.
The first official pedicurist, as he called himself, was David Lowe, an Englishman who took up in 1780 a quite profitable business – cutting calluses. Five years later, he published a scientific paper called “Hiropodology.” The term “pedicure master” (Chiropodist) appeared in this publication for the first time.
In 1830, Dr. Zittz began using metal tools for the nails and feet treatment, mainly for the prevention of fungal diseases and later the method was called a “Zietz method.” This method became widely used for aesthetic purposes only in 1892 by the American inhabitants, and after them, the rest of countries began using this technique.
After the Zitt`s death in 1868, his son Edward Gerlach inherited a firm from his father. The company at that time traded with colonial goods and later continued the family business and expanded its sphere – began to sell pharmacy goods, and eventually became the founder of the world-famous trade mark “Gevol” (Gehwol), which currently stands as one of the best companies producing nail and feet treatment products.

In 1913 (in some sources in 1916), the first Pedicure School was opened in New York. Among the first graduates was the only one woman and this fact was a real sensation at that time because this profession was previously considered as purely male one.
The big benefit for the distribution of professional pedicure was brought by the wide range of people who had performed this procedure: dental masters, nurses, masseurs. This was the key to the successful development of a new direction – a “pedology”, and soon, in addition to the classic pedicure, appeared a hardware pedicure.
These days, classic pedicure became vital for those who care about the beauty and health of their legs.
